The Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ7 has a lot going for it. This is a smaller, compact digital camera with a 12x optical zoom lens. It is a little on the large side for fitting into a pocket, but when you consider the amount of zoom on offer this is still a very small camera. As well as offering obvious telephoto quality for zooming in at distance the lens has one of the widest shooting angles available. A wide angle lens can squeeze in a great deal of width for wide scenes such as landscapes. This gives the Lumix DMC TZ7 great flexibility in the pictures it can take.
Panasonic often offer a feature called extra zoom. This is available with the Lumix DMC TZ7. It gives you the option of reducing the number of megapixels you shoot at from the maximum 10 megapixels, in exchange for more zoom becoming available. In this case if you reduce the number of megapixels to three, a maximum of 21x zoom becomes available. This further underlines the flexibility of the camera. As you would expect with a camera with this amount of zoom available, image stabilisation has been included in the list of features. This can help to compensate for any small movements of the camera and lead to the sharpest possible images.
The camera has a solid feel in the hand. This suggests to me a good build quality. One of a number of impressive features is the 3 inch LCD screen you find on the back of the camera. The screen is made up of 460,000 pixels. This is twice the standard amount and helps to increase the quality of the screen over and above what I am used to seeing.
One of the most interesting areas is the movie mode. Not only are High Definition movies available, but you can also record in stereo sound. The Lumix DMC TZ7 is also one of the few digital cameras able to zoom in and out while you are recording a video. On top of this there is a dedicated button on the back of the camera to start and stop movie recording. Normally you have to place a camera into movie mode before you can start shooting. This innovation helps to ensure you do not miss any crucial footage. Panasonic has also incorporated special movie scene modes to help your videos look as good as they possibly can.
When it comes to the quality of the still images the Lumix DMC TZ7 is hard to beat in its class. I was knocked out by the sharpness of the photos I took, especially when considering how wide the lens is on this camera. It manages to overcome the common problem of softer images when the lens is not zoomed in at all. I think the overall picture quality underlines the advantage you often have when buying a digital camera with a larger lens unit. This relates to the physical size of the unit itself rather than the amount of zoom available.
I was also impressed with the quality of close up shots the camera is capable of. You should be able to produce pleasing macro shots if this is one of the areas of photography of interest to you.
As is becoming increasingly common Panasonic has incorporated an intelligent auto mode. When placed in this mode the camera tries to identify the type of scene you are photographing and fine tune the settings accordingly.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ7 is a good choice if you are looking for a camera for your summer holiday or for any travel in general. It offers great flexibility in a number of areas and also takes a great photo.
