The Product

The Nikon D60 SLR digital burst on the camera world scene in February of 2008 and was thrust into the spotlight thanks to the help of a high profile ad campaign featuring Ashton Kutcher. The D60 doesn't look all that much different than 2006's Nikon D40, but one look under the "hood" and the upgrades are clear.

The Good

The D60 incorporates a state of the art Active Dust Reduction System that includes air vents that help to deflect dust particles away from the lens. In addition, this upgrade also includes an Optical Low Pass Filter vibration system that works to gently shake dust from the low pass filter upon start up and shut down. Another cool touch is the auto sensor that will change the LCD view from vertical to horizontal depending on the camera's orientation. The D60 also added data imprinting to help date and timestamp photos as well. While the D40's upgrade the D40x feature 10.2 megapixel's vs. 6.1, the D60 comes standard with 10.2.

These are just a few of the many upgrades and improvements that Nikon saw fit to include in this next generation package of their popular people friendly line.

The Bad

One of the main drawbacks for the D60 has been the price. The $550+ price tag is a little pricey for what it offers compared to other models that exist on the marketplace. Another drawback is that the lens based stabilization is not quite up to the level of the sensor shift that is currently offered my other competitors. Image quality, while well above average, is rated a solid 7 out of 10 by many camera enthusiasts and websites.

The Verdict

Overall, the Nikon D60 is a solid product in the world of entry level digital SLR's. For many who have trusted Nikon for years, the quality and dependability of this product does not disappoint. User Friendly is a word that wants to be used by any newbie to the world of SLR's and this model does not disappoint. Considering the overwhelming popularity of the D40 series, this next generation Nikon SLR, while just a tad out of the price range for some, offers a plethora of features and will deliver image quality that will be at or above the standards of most photography enthusiasts out there.
